Rhyl Athletic had a great run in the F.A. Cup in the 1926/27 season. In the first round proper, Rhyl played Stoke at home on Saturday, November 27th. They drew 1-1. A replay was played at Stoke on Thursday, December 2nd and again the score was 1-1. A second replay was arranged for Monday, December 6th at Old Trafford, Rhyl were victorious beating Stoke city 2-1. This photograph shows the Rhyl supporters, pictured by the special train which took them to the match. I wonder if this was on the way to Stoke or to Old Trafford? We have two names: 6th from the left at the front is Jim Nevitt and 9th from left is O.J. Williams. Please leave a message on the blog if you have any more information about the photo.
In the second round Rhyl beat Wrexham 3-1 at home, and went on the draw Darlington in the third round. Unfortunately Rhyl lost at Darlington 2-1 on Saturday, January 8th 1927. Darlington were beaten in the following round by the eventual winners of the cup, Cardiff City. The Cup Final between Arsenal and Cardiff City was most remembered for a mistake by the Arsenal goalkeeper Dan Lewis, himself a Welshman.
This was the first ever Cup Final to be broadcast by BBC Radio.
